So. I became a self-proclaimed feminist when I realized that the things my dad told me about the movement and racism just weren’t true. That the experiences my household and I have experienced, and what they’ve told me, aren’t the only experiences in the world. I never did understand why men decided that I was something to be used, or to not contribute if it’s a “manly” thing, like carrying something heavy. I never understood that the topic of abortion wasn’t just about “saving lives,” but it was about the restriction of women, especially recently with the Ohio and Georgia laws. I didn’t know why my older cousin told me of how she was raped, and why she didn’t tell anyone else about it. I personally never want children, so I am afraid of ever having male-female sex in case I ever do and I can’t do anything about it, and I shouldn’t be. Years ago I used to consider a now-good friend of mine a “stupid liberal,” as my parents worded it, because she believed in it. Because I didn’t understand what the purpose was in marches and such. I thought the Republicans were the good guys and the Democrats were the bad guys. And then I realized that feminism isn’t a party. It shouldn’t be. Feminism is a concern that personally affects so many, and people who just say they “don’t wanna talk politics” when confronted with the subject just don’t wanna talk about something that can affect their outdated and inappropriate ways. I also realized that the reasons why ppl reject feminism is because 1) they don’t know enough/think the conservative news streams’ interpretations of them are the only types of feminists out there, 2) they’re afraid it will lead to them sinking lower just because women will rise, 3) they just don’t want to know. So now I know, and now I try to immerse myself in the experiences of all, including trans women, interracial men/women, women of different religions and how that influences them, and just everyone in general, because I want to understand and help.
