The ‘me too’ movement was founded in 2006 to help survivors of sexual violence, particularly Black women and girls, and other young women of color from low wealth communities, find pathways to healing. The vision from the beginning was to address both the dearth in resources for survivors of sexual violence and to build a community of advocates, driven by survivors, who will be at the forefront of creating solutions to interrupt sexual violence in their communities.

In less than six months, because of the viral #metoo hashtag, a vital conversation about sexual violence has been thrust into the national dialogue. What started as local grassroots work has expanded to reach a global community of survivors from all walks of life and helped to de-stigmatize the act of surviving by highlighting the breadth and impact of a sexual violence worldwide.

The #MeToo movement inspired several countries, but we will talk about Mexico in this particular case. Several universities across the country started twitter accounts where girls would anonymously send their stories about their experiences of sexual abuse

(including sexual harassment/rape) denouncing the abusers from a safe place so other girls could be aware and in hope that the univerisity´s security would do something (in most cases, they never do anything).

This past week in the city of Merida, Yucatan a twitter account called @MeTooMerida was created, in less than 24 hours they recieved hundreds and hundreds of messages, it became trending topic in the country. The account was taked down because the administrators started to recieve death treats ffrom the abusers that were acused, gladly 3 other girls created the back up account @MeTooMerida2 and the messages and stories are still arriving.

We think its really important to bring the spotlight in this issue and thankfully we have the platform to do it. So please, we invite you to read and to share. Lets create awareness.
